Karen Bables
Welcome to my blog about living as apprentices of Jesus! I am passionate about spiritual transformation and about helping others become like Jesus for the sake of others.
One of my favorite quotes is: "Whatever job we get and whatever task we are assigned can serve as a container for grace" (Eugene Peterson in "Practical Resurrection"). I pray that the words and sentences on this blog may also serve as "containers of grace" for its readers.
I ordinarily post on Wednesdays and Saturdays and welcome your comments on any post!

LIVING AS APPRENTICES The sun shyly made an effort last night. Right at the closing of a November-like day in October, it painted the tips of huge puffy gray clouds a light yellow. The sky looked like a mountain range topped with creamy lemon frosting. This striking sight reminded me of … Continue reading

Deadlines vs. Lifelines – Meet Pico Iyer
LIVING AS APPRENTICES Saturday morning (at 6:30 AM!) I was listening to the TED Radio Hour on my favorite NPR station, Michigan radio, (very grateful that the station had paused the fall fund-raising drive for my two “can’t-miss” shows: this one and On the Media). I was … Continue reading

A Trail of Goodness and Mercy
Living as Apprentices I have the reputation of being a “word person.” This phrase is the first thing my husband says when he introduces or describes me, probably because during our conversations he is constantly being quizzed about which word he really … Continue reading

Living as Apprentices Fascinating facts: Because fleas were a common problem, medieval castle owners planted herbs beds to be walked upon. The herbs were crushed by foot traffic and released oils which were picked up by shoes and trailing skirts. This protected … Continue reading

Living as Apprentices Thoughts From Fr. Richard Rohr: “The path of descent is the path of transformation. Darkness, failure, relapse, death, and woundedness are our primary teachers, rather than ideas or doctrines.” Thoughts From Francis of Assisi (whose … Continue reading

Living as Apprentices Sometimes you find wisdom in the oddest places! I have to admit that I love TV shows like Undercover Boss and Secret Millionaire. Privileged men and women journey into worlds they have only heard about and learn … Continue reading
