Karen Bables
Welcome to my blog about living as apprentices of Jesus! I am passionate about spiritual transformation and about helping others become like Jesus for the sake of others.
One of my favorite quotes is: "Whatever job we get and whatever task we are assigned can serve as a container for grace" (Eugene Peterson in "Practical Resurrection"). I pray that the words and sentences on this blog may also serve as "containers of grace" for its readers.
I ordinarily post on Wednesdays and Saturdays and welcome your comments on any post!

Winter’s Gifts
LIVING AS APPRENTICES I am snowed in – again. Peeking through the frost stenciled inside our storm door, I glimpse huge drifts around and on top of our cars, which unfortunately crouch defenseless against the weather. Yesterday, after 90 minutes of shoveling, I was … Continue reading

MY JOURNEY Considering that the first 50 years of my life were characterized by depression, confusion, rebellion, and waywardness (love that word, so Prodigal-Son-like!), I’ve been pleasantly surprised that within the last few weeks someone has called me her mentor and two others have officially asked me to be … Continue reading

Me Watching Me
LIVING AS APPRENTICES In the classes I teach, I’m accustomed to saying that spiritual transformation requires three components: surrender, choice, and feeling safe (i.e. believing that we live in the unshakable kingdom God and no matter what happens to us we are … Continue reading
Being a Person of “Large Leisure”
LIVING AS APPRENTICES This excerpt from a sermon by N. Gordon Cosby, founding minister of The Church of the Saviour in Washington D.C. reminds us that being busy and productive is not the goal of an Apprentice of Jesus: “Way … Continue reading

Living As Apprentices I am a political junkie. Therefore I spend a lot of time reading about and listening to political issues, much to the amazement of most of my friends. But spending my intellect on the state of national, and world … Continue reading
