Karen Bables
Welcome to my blog about living as apprentices of Jesus! I am passionate about spiritual transformation and about helping others become like Jesus for the sake of others.
One of my favorite quotes is: "Whatever job we get and whatever task we are assigned can serve as a container for grace" (Eugene Peterson in "Practical Resurrection"). I pray that the words and sentences on this blog may also serve as "containers of grace" for its readers.
I ordinarily post on Wednesdays and Saturdays and welcome your comments on any post!

Living with Mystery
“Mystery, for [the apostle] Paul, is not what is left over after we have done our best to reason things out. It is inherent in the very nature of God and his works” (Eugene Peterson in As Kingfishers Catch Fire, (p. 271). … Continue reading

Going Deeper – Safe in God’s Love (Romans 8: 38-39)
In Eat this Book, Eugene Peterson teaches us to chew on a passage of scripture, digest it, and then put it to use in practical ways. Our Christian fathers and mothers called this process Lectio Divina. In this passage, Paul, a great man … Continue reading

Lessons from a Cactus Plant
For many years one of my most beloved treasures has been a large cactus plant. Quite nondescript for most of the year, it burst into a riot of color in late November and early December. It had so many blossoms … Continue reading

Snow in April
This weekend, Spring treated us to a snow-dusted fairy land. It is not supposed to snow in April – even in Michigan. As I gazed out the window, I was reminded of a story I wrote in a Hope College … Continue reading

Praying Psalm 23
Long ago, I learned Psalm 23 “by heart.” This means that I memorized it and it became part of my heart. I have said this psalm most nights for years. Recently I began to see how it can be used as a … Continue reading
