Karen Bables
Welcome to my blog about living as apprentices of Jesus! I am passionate about spiritual transformation and about helping others become like Jesus for the sake of others.
One of my favorite quotes is: "Whatever job we get and whatever task we are assigned can serve as a container for grace" (Eugene Peterson in "Practical Resurrection"). I pray that the words and sentences on this blog may also serve as "containers of grace" for its readers.
I ordinarily post on Wednesdays and Saturdays and welcome your comments on any post!

The Battle for the Soul of America
For three years now I have been fighting two battles, one physical and one spiritual. The physical battle is against two diseases at war against my body: multiple myeloma, a treatable but incurable blood cell cancer which destroys the good blood … Continue reading
Instead
“Instead is a word of exchange.” (Eugene Peterson) I’ve been musing about this statement for weeks. This is what I have concluded. The word “instead” is a word of change, of choice, of substitution, of purging. It is also a word … Continue reading
Let the Little Children Come to Me (and to America)
“God, for so many people facing an impossible decision—to stay home and face violence and the threat of death, or to make the dangerous journey north and face the threat of violence and separation from children—we lift prayers for wisdom. … Continue reading
“Crank up your Volume”
This is not a political blog site, but Christians live in a highly politicized atmosphere in all parts of the globe including America. The politics of a nation are the purview of a blog site whose title is Living as … Continue reading

The Mark of a Great Disciple
“The mark of a great ship handler is never getting in a situation that requires great ship handling skills” (Retired Admiral James Stavridis in his new book Sea Power). I heard this gem during an interview with Admiral Stavridis on NPR’s … Continue reading

Patterns
Recently I watched a TV show focused on the difficulty of understanding the Trump presi- dency. One commentator offered a suggestion as to why many of us are so puzzled (and aggravated) by the president’s words and actions. He said that the … Continue reading

People of the Lie – Update
When I was growing up, I was taught that what our family believed was the Truth; if you didn’t agree, you were wrong. Then I learned that there is my truth, your truth, and then there is the Truth. In … Continue reading

How Did We Get Here? – A Perspective on the 2016 Election
“How did we get here?” is a question I have heard often in the weeks since Donald Trump was elected as the 45th President of the United States. “What do we do now?” is the next question. The two quotes … Continue reading
